Our Thoughts

The 2019 Sabre 38 Salon Express "Serendipity" represents one of the more thoughtfully equipped examples of this well-regarded Downeast express cruiser currently available on the East Coast. Listed at West River, Maryland, this 38-foot, twin-engine cruiser carries 1,135 hours on her twin Volvo Penta D4 300HP IPS drives and 665 hours on her Cummins Onan 7.5KW generator — both figures consistent with a boat that has been used regularly and maintained with care. For buyers evaluating a Sabre 38 Salon Express, the combination of IPS pod drive propulsion, a Mark II hardtop, and a comprehensive Volvo Glass Cockpit integration with Garmin electronics makes this a well-specified vessel that reflects the evolution of the platform rather than an early production example.

Hull, Construction, and Exterior

The Sabre 38 Salon Express is built in Maine using VIP resin-infused laminate construction with ISO NPG white gelcoat and blended vinylester resin, knitted biaxial structural E-glass reinforcements, and SAN Corecell foam core in both the hull bottom and topsides. The deck and hardtop are composite VIP resin-infused biaxial E-glass with balsa coring. This is a serious construction specification that speaks to the long-term structural integrity Sabre has built its reputation around. The hull features a 24-degree deadrise amidships transitioning to 17 degrees at the transom, a design profile that balances offshore ride quality with the efficiency benefits of the IPS drive system.

"Serendipity" presents in Sabre White gelcoat with a Flag Blue painted double boot stripe, a gold cove stripe, and a dark red bottom. The contrasting anti-skid color has been applied to the fore and side decks, aft cockpit, and the recessed area on the swim platform — a custom option that adds both visual distinction and practical traction. The swim platform features molded anti-skid and an under-mounted telescoping ladder, and dinghy davits have been added to the swim platform as a subsequent upgrade.

Deck hardware is stainless throughout, including a 1¼-inch diameter type 316 perimeter rail system, six 12-inch stainless cleats, a windlass with a combination rope and chain gypsy, and a stainless steel anchor-bowsprit roller system sized for a 35-pound CQR or Delta anchor. Wide side decks with secure handholds make movement fore and aft straightforward, and port and starboard transom gates provide easy cockpit access from the dock or swim platform.

Propulsion and Systems

Twin Volvo Penta D4 300HP engines paired with Volvo Penta IPS drives define the performance character of this vessel. The IPS pod drive system provides forward-facing propellers, joystick docking control, and the Volvo Automatic Interceptor trim tabs for active trim management. The Volvo Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) is included, as is the Active Corrosion Protection System and the Sabre exhaust bypass system. Together, these features make single-handed docking and close-quarters maneuvering considerably more manageable than a conventional shaft drive configuration of similar displacement.

Keyless deck fills for fuel, water, and waste are among the Mark II evolution upgrades present on this hull. With 300 gallons of fuel capacity and 100

"Serendipity" is a very well maintained example of the popular Sabre 38 Salon Express.  Her hull is crisp, clean white gelcoat with contrasting Flag Blue double boot stripe, and she has a dark red bottom.  She benefits from the modern improvements of the evolution of the Sabre 38, including the mark II hard top design, Volvo Glass Cockpit MFD integration, Volvo Interceptor trim tabs, Volvo DPS, keyless deck fills for fuel, water, and waste, and a built-in cutlery tray in the top drawer of the galley to name a few.  Please be sure to click on the Other Details tab for all of the details on this beautiful boat!  She is not to be missed! The Sabre 38 Salon Express offers her captain and crew a very open layout with excellent sightlines throughout.  Built by skilled Maine craftsmen in a traditional blend of old-world style and elegance, while also enjoying the most modern features available on the market today, this 2019 example is an elegant vessel. Starting below in the master stateroom, you will find a comfortable island berth with custom Portland Mattress Makers 10" mattress, storage below the berth and flanking either side of the stateroom as well.  Hanging locker is to starboard with a nice blend of cabinet and drawer storage opposite to port.  A motorized partition panel has a TV on the side facing the master berth, and it also doubles for additional privacy when needed. Moving aft from the master brings you to the large head with separate shower to starboard.  Access is either directly from the master stateroom or from a second door opposite the galley.  The L-shaped galley is to port with double-drawer refrigerator, electric range, convection microwave oven, polished stainless steel sink, and Corian countertop.  Storage abounds in many compartments and drawers. Aft of the galley is the lower lounge area which can be made up into a double berth with privacy curtain if needed.  Many owners report that this is a favorite spot to enjoy a good book in the evening.  Optional hull port with shade offer visibility outside.  Under the steps is the optional freezer and additional large storage area. Stepping up from the lower lounge and galley bring you to the helm station on the starboard side.  A single Stidd seat makes both short and long passages a pleasure.  Opposite to port is the convertible mate seat.  Depending on the desired configuration, it can have a small single seat (offering the dinette behind a larger seating area around the table), or it can be flipped around to have a large forward facing seat.  Dinette table is just aft of this seat and offers either L or U-shaped seating depending on the designed configuration.  This vessel has the optional salon table which converts to make an additional berth if desired.  Below the seat there is additional storage and the infamous Sabre tool drawer. Opposite is the entertainment center and storage area.  TV is on a motorized lift, and there is storage for bar ware and other equipment. Cockpit has both forward and rear facing seats, with the forward facing seats on an electric sliding mechanism to enhance cockpit space as needed, and the teak cockpit table slides with the seat.  Storage can be found below all seats.  Engine/machinery space is accessed by a large hatch in the cockpit sole. Wide side decks afford easy passage with good handholds found throughout.  Anchor forward is deployed and retrieved by a windlass, and the rode is stored below on centerline.  Additional storage lockers are found on either side and are great for storing fenders, lines, and a wash down hose. The Sabre 38 Salon Express offers a lot of features within her 38' length, and has been one of Sabre's most popular models for many years.

2019 Sabre 38 Salon Express for Sale — "Serendipity" | West River, MD
Overview
The 2019 Sabre 38 Salon Express listed as *Serendipity* represents one of the most thoughtfully configured examples of this celebrated Maine-built express cruiser currently available on the East Coast. Offered at $695,000 and located in West River, Maryland, this vessel combines Sabre's signature Downeast design heritage with a comprehensive package of modern systems, custom factory options, and recent maintenance attention that makes her a compelling choice for serious cruising buyers. At 38 feet on deck with a 13.33-foot beam and a 3.33-foot draft, the Sabre 38 Salon Express occupies a well-defined position in the mid-size express cruiser market — capable enough for extended coastal passages, refined enough for weekend entertaining, and compact enough to fit a wide range of marina slips and mooring situations. Her hull presents crisp white gelcoat with a contrasting Flag Blue double boot stripe and gold cove stripe over a dark red bottom, a classic combination that reflects the Sabre aesthetic without veering into either understated or overdone territory. This particular vessel was ordered with a meaningful selection of factory custom options and benefits from what Sabre refers to as their Mark II hard top design, along with Volvo Glass Cockpit MFD integration, Volvo Interceptor trim tabs, Volvo DPS, and keyless deck fills for fuel, water, and waste — all features that distinguish later-production 38 Salon Express builds from earlier examples. ---
Hull Construction and Design
Sabre builds the 38 Salon Express using a VIP resin-infused laminate process incorporating ISO NPG white gelcoat, blended vinylester resin, and knitted biaxial structural E-glass reinforcements. The hull bottom and topsides use SAN Corecell foam core, and the stringer system is foam-cored fiberglass. The hull carries a 24-degree deadrise amidships and 17 degrees at the transom — a moderate-to-deep vee configuration that supports confident offshore performance and a comfortable ride in chop without sacrificing stability at anchor or in the slip. The deck and hardtop structure are composite VIP resin-infused knitted biaxial E-glass with balsa coring, molded-in anti-skid surfaces, and windows recessed into the hard top. The perimeter rail system is 1.25-inch type 316 stainless steel, and six 12-inch stainless steel cleats are distributed fore and mid-ship, with an additional 10-inch cleat at the windlass. A stainless steel anchor-bowsprit roller system, dual anchor lockers with slam latches, and a windlass with combination rope/chain gypsy handle ground tackle from the bow. The swim platform includes a molded anti-skid surface and an under-mounted telescoping ladder. ---
Layout and Deck Design
The Sabre 38 Salon Express is built around what the builder describes as 360-degree sightlines at the helm, and the layout supports that claim through a raised helm station that provides excellent forward and lateral visibility. The wide side decks allow easy fore-and-aft movement with secure handholds throughout, and the port and starboard transom gates provide clean access to the swim platform. The cockpit is designed with flexibility as a priority. Forward and aft-facing seats are both present, and the forward-facing seats operate on a 12-volt electric sliding mechanism that allows the cockpit footprint to expand when the seating is moved forward. The teak cockpit table slides with the seat, maintaining a functional entertaining or dining surface in either position. Storage is found beneath all cockpit seats, and the large aft-hinged engine room hatch in the cockpit sole — held open by gas struts and secured by two 3-inch compression latches — provides excellent access to the machinery space below. ---
Helm and Electronics
The helm station is positioned to starboard in the main salon, elevated above the lower lounge and galley. The Stidd helm chair, upholstered in Ultraleather Sand Dollar, is the anchor of a well-organized single-station layout. Opposite to port, a convertible mate seat can be configured as either a smaller single seat opening the dinette behind it, or flipped to create a large forward-facing seat. The electronics suite on *Serendipity* is built around Volvo Glass Cockpit integration with a Garmin 16-inch MFD and a Volvo/Garmin 7612 multi-function display. Navigation and situational awareness are supported by a Garmin GMR 24xHD 4kW 24-inch radome, Garmin AIS 800 blackbox transceiver, Garmin GMI20 instrument display, Garmin GMS10 network port expander, and a Garmin GXM 53 SiriusXM Weather Module. The Airmar DT800 tilted-element NMEA2000 depth and temperature transducer handles sonar data. Communications include a Garmin VHF 315 marine radio with GHS11 handset and a Shakespeare 3-foot whip VHF antenna. An ACR RCL-75 remote control spotlight with a 20-foot extension cable is also fitted. Volvo autopilot is integrated into the helm screen, and joystick driving through the Volvo IPS pod drive system allows for precise low-speed maneuvering — a significant practical advantage for shorthanded operation. ---
Power and Performance
*Serendipity* is powered by twin Volvo Penta D4 300-horsepower engines linked to Volvo Penta IPS pod drives. The D4 is a 3.7-liter four-cylinder fresh water-cooled diesel with Volvo electronic controls. The IPS pod drive configuration delivers forward-facing propellers that improve efficiency and reduce noise and vibration compared to conventional shaft drive arrangements, and the integrated joystick system makes close-quarters handling accessible even in tight marina environments. The engines show 1,135 hours at time of listing, and the generator — a Cummins Onan 7.5kW unit — shows 665 hours. Volvo Automatic Interceptor trim tabs handle trim management, and an active corrosion protection system is fitted. A Sabre exhaust bypass system is also included. Fuel capacity is 300 gallons, and fresh water capacity is 100 gallons, supporting extended coastal cruising range. Recent maintenance items include replacement of port engine batteries, replacement of both reverse-cycle air conditioning units with MarineAir units, addition of an engine coolant loop to the hot water heater, and installation of dinghy davits on the swim platform. ---
Cabin and Interior
Below decks, the Sabre 38 Salon Express organizes its accommodations into a forward master stateroom, a full head, an L-shaped galley, and a lower lounge that can serve as a second sleeping area — providing genuine two-cabin, one-head functionality in a 38-foot hull. The master stateroom forward features a spacious island berth layout with a custom Portland Mattress Makers 10-inch Eastport mattress, cherry hull ceilings, a teak and holly sole with two coats of sealer, and soft headliner panels. Storage is extensive: drawers under the berth, a bureau with drawers and a locker, upper storage lockers to port and starboard, and a large cedar-lined hanging locker to starboard with a shelf, hanger pole, and open shelf above. A motorized partition panel carries a television on the side facing the berth and provides additional privacy separation when desired. The head is accessible both from the master stateroom and from a second door opposite the galley. It includes a tempered glass shower stall with seat, an electric freshwater flushing toilet, hot and cold pressure water, an electric shower sump pump, Witch Hazel solid surface countertop with bullnose edge, a wood-trimmed mirror, towel bars, a storage locker, and a ventilation blower. The L-shaped galley to port is fitted with a Witch Hazel Corian countertop, a stainless steel sink, a two-burner electric cooktop, a stainless steel convection microwave oven, a stainless steel drawer-style refrigerator operating on both 12VDC and 120VAC, and a freezer in the lower lounge on the same dual-voltage system. A single Seagull water purifier on the galley provides filtered water through a separate spigot.
