Our Thoughts

This 2004 Silverton 48 Convertible represents a thoughtfully maintained example of one of the most successful mid-sized cruising yachts of its era. Located in Port Washington, New York, the vessel combines the spacious interior and coastal versatility that defined the Silverton 48 platform—a design that remained in production through 2008 (marketed as the 50 Convertible in later years) due to its proven appeal among owners seeking comfort over tournament fishing credentials.

Hull, Dimensions & Construction

Built on a solid fiberglass hull with a generous 16.33-foot beam and integral prop pockets, this 55-foot convertible displaces weight efficiently across her 4-foot draft—a practical dimension for East Coast cruising and protected-water exploration. The wide beam maximizes interior volume and stability, a hallmark of Silverton's design philosophy. The hull construction reflects the builder's attention to structural integrity, with the engine room designed around vinyl-coated steel I-beams that transmit engine loads directly to bulkheads rather than stringers, reducing stress on the hull structure. Bilges are finished with gelcoat, and the underside of the salon sole employs vacuum-bagged, balsa-cored composite construction with a high-gloss molded finish—details that speak to the quality standards Silverton maintained during this production period.

Propulsion & Performance

Twin Volvo 715-horsepower D-12 diesel engines provide the power plant for this convertible. These marinized diesels are known for reliability and efficiency, capable of cruising speeds in the mid to high 20-knot range with reported top speeds exceeding 30 knots. The engines are mounted in an exceptionally well-planned engine room offering 5 feet 6 inches of headroom, with ample access and working space around all machinery—a practical advantage for routine maintenance and troubleshooting. Rubberized diamond-plate flooring throughout the engine room supports safety and durability.

Fuel, Water & Systems

A 793-gallon fuel capacity supports extended cruising without frequent refueling, while 200 gallons of fresh water storage accommodates extended time away from the dock. The vessel includes a raw water washdown system, livewell, and transom door—practical features for coastal operation and dockside convenience. A substantial storage compartment accessed via hatch in the galley sole provides additional stowage for cruising gear and provisions.

Flybridge & Hardtop

The flybridge integrates a full four-sided enclosure with new polycarbonate side and front panels (recently upgraded), allowing year-round use in variable weather. The entire bridge benefits from air-conditioning capability, and the hardtop features integrated arch construction that blends convertible and modern cruiser aesthetics. Molded flybridge steps provide secure access, with recent custom overlay carpeting and newly re-upholstered cushions. A new retractable SureShade cockpit shade enhances comfort during extended time topside, while a new aft enclosure completes the weather protection package.

Helm & Helm Station

The helm area features tournament-style wheel control with tiered electronics integration. Bucket-style upholstered helm seating and a companion seat offer comfort and visibility, while a forward lounge area—larger than typical for the class—provides additional seating and observation space. The arrangement reflects Silverton's commitment to blending functional design with livability.

Interior Layout & Accommodations

2004 Silverton 48 Convertible: A Well-Appointed Coastal Cruiser with Modern Upgrades in Port Washington
Overview
The 2004 Silverton 48 Convertible represents a distinctive approach to mid-sized yacht design, prioritizing comfort, interior volume, and versatile cruising capability over specialized fishing functionality. Built during Silverton's peak production years, this 55-foot vessel combines proven fiberglass construction with a thoughtfully engineered layout that has made the 48 Convertible one of the most recognizable models in its class. Located in Port Washington, New York, this example has benefited from substantial recent upgrades and consistent mechanical maintenance, positioning it as a turnkey option for buyers seeking a coastal cruiser with established reliability and contemporary comfort systems. The 48 Convertible's design philosophy centers on livability and entertaining space rather than tournament fishing performance. Silverton's engineering team achieved this through a generous 16.33-foot beam, prop pockets that enhance maneuverability and reduce draft, and a three-stateroom interior that rivals many larger vessels in terms of accommodation quality and usable square footage. The soft, sweeping lines of the hull integrate seamlessly with the integrated arch and hardtop, creating a modern cruiser profile that distinguishes the 48 from the more angular tournament-style convertibles that dominated the market during this era.
Hull Design and Structural Engineering
Constructed from solid fiberglass, the 48 Convertible's hull reflects Silverton's commitment to durability and seaworthiness. The 16.33-foot beam provides exceptional stability and interior width without compromising offshore capability, while the four-foot draft and prop pockets allow operation in shallower waters and reduce exposure to underwater obstacles. This combination of beam and draft makes the vessel suitable for both protected coastal waters and moderate offshore conditions, though her design emphasis clearly favors comfort and cruising range over high-speed performance. The engine room exemplifies the care taken in the 48's structural design. Five feet six inches of headroom, coupled with strategically positioned access points and open machinery arrangements, facilitates routine maintenance and emergency repairs without requiring extensive disassembly. The engines mount on vinyl-coated steel I-beams that transmit loads directly to the hull bulkheads rather than relying solely on stringers, a design choice that distributes stress more effectively throughout the structure. Rubberized diamond-plate flooring throughout the engine compartment provides both safety and noise dampening. The bilges feature a smooth gelcoat finish for easier cleaning and inspection, while the underside of the saloon sole utilizes vacuum-bagged, balsa-cored composite construction with a high-gloss molded finish—details that reflect attention to both functionality and longevity.
Power and Performance
Twin Volvo 715-horsepower D-12 diesel engines provide the 48 Convertible's propulsion, delivering a cruising speed in the mid to high 20-knot range with top speeds exceeding 30 knots. These proven marine diesels are known for reliability, fuel efficiency, and longevity, making them a standard choice for extended cruising operations. The 793-gallon fuel capacity supports extended range and multi-day coastal passages, while the 200-gallon fresh water capacity accommodates a crew of four to six for typical cruising schedules. Recent servicing of the bow thruster, along with replacement of the bow thruster batteries, ensures responsive maneuvering in tight quarters and alongside docks—a critical feature for solo operation and precision docking. The dual-engine configuration with independent systems provides redundancy for extended offshore work and adds confidence during single-engine operation if maintenance or mechanical issues arise.
Helm and Electronics
The helm layout reflects the 48 Convertible's cruiser-first philosophy, with a comfortable tournament-style wheel and tiered electronics arrangement that prioritizes visibility and ergonomic operation. Bucket-style upholstered helm and companion seating provide a flair of comfort uncommon in convertible-class vessels, while the lounge area forward of the helm offers space for crew or guests without crowding the operating area. The electronics suite combines established brands known for reliability and ease of integration. Navigation and chart plotting rely on dual FURUNO Navnet TZ systems (GPS/chart plotter), with the TZ2 model providing multi-display capability. Depth, speed, position, course over ground, and seawater temperature data flow through FURUNO RD-30 multi-displays positioned for easy reference during operation. The FURUNO FCV-1200L color video sounder delivers detailed sonar imagery, while the open-array scanner provides traditional radar overlay for weather and navigation awareness. Communication systems include dual VHF radios: an ICOM IC-M506 for standard marine band operation and a SIMRAD RS-35 with integrated AIS capability. The SIMRAD NAIS-400 Class B AIS transceiver provides automatic identification system functionality, allowing the vessel to transmit her position and receive position data from other equipped vessels. The SIMRAD NSPL-400 VHF antenna splitter consolidates antenna systems for cleaner deck hardware. A RITCHIE magnetic steering compass provides backup navigation capability independent of electronic systems, a prudent safety measure for extended cruising. The RAYMARINE ST6001+ autopilot handles extended cruising legs, reducing fatigue during long coastal passages and allowing the helm operator to attend to other vessel systems or enjoy the bridge environment. The entire electronics array supports confident day and night operation in coastal waters and moderate offshore conditions.
Flybridge and Deck Configuration
The flybridge represents a significant feature of the 48 Convertible, offering a commanding helm position and expansive entertaining space. The hardtop features a full four-sided enclosure, with recent replacement of the aft enclosure and front and side polycarbonate panels, ensuring weather protection and visibility. The entire bridge can be air-conditioned, extending the usable season and providing refuge during inclement weather. Molded fiberglass steps lead from the main deck to the flybridge, recently overlaid with custom carpeting that improves aesthetics and provides safe footing in wet conditions. Flybridge cushions have been re-upholstered, refreshing the seating and extending comfort for extended bridge time. The upper helm position provides excellent sightlines and a commanding vantage point for navigation, docking, and enjoying the cruising environment. The cockpit layout emphasizes versatility and functionality. A transom door facilitates boarding and water access, while a raw water washdown system supports deck cleaning and tackle rinsing. A livewell, freezer, and engine room access door round out the cockpit features, accommodating light fishing activity and routine maintenance access. A new SureShade retractable cockpit shade provides sun protection without permanent structure, allowing flexibility in how the cockpit space is used and maintaining sight lines when shade is not needed.
Cabin and Interior Appointments
The 48 Convertible's interior represents Silverton's mastery of bringing shoreside comfort and luxury to a cruising vessel. The three-stateroom layout includes a large amidships master cabin with a walkaround queen berth, providing the privacy and comfort expected in a vessel of this caliber. The forward cabin features a queen island berth with private access to a dedicated head, while the third cabin offers upper and lower berths suitable for crew or guests. The master stateroom benefits from a custom mattress, providing superior support and comfort for extended cruising. Two private heads—one accessed directly from the master and a second shared between the forward cabin and the main passageway—ensure guest convenience and reduce morning bottlenecks aboard. All three cabins feature new wallpaper, refreshing the interior aesthetic and protecting the underlying cabin structure. The main salon showcases the 48's design strength, with an L-shaped settee, an aft built-in recliner, and generous windows that flood the space with natural light. Unusual among modern convertibles, front windows in the forward salon area provide additional brightness and visual connection to the cruising environment. The solid cherry interior, finished with satin to reduce gloss and enhance warmth, is accented with high-quality soft goods and European hardware and fixtures that reflect the vessel's premium positioning. A custom hi-low table in the salon provides flexible dining and entertaining options, adjusting height to accommodate both seated dining and casual socializing. The entertainment system includes three new televisions distributed throughout the vessel, along with multiple audio systems: a SONY MEX-M70BT AM/FM/CD receiver with four exterior speakers on the flybridge, a SONY CDX R30M AM/FM/CD/MP3 system with two cabin speakers in the master stateroom, and a SONY CDX CA705M AM/FM/CD changer system with two cabin speakers in the forward cabin. A Bose stereo system in the salon provides quality sound for the main entertaining area.
