Our Take

The 2016 Grand Banks 72 Aleutian RP represents a masterclass in owner-operated offshore cruising yacht design and execution. Registered as DASH, this 77-foot-4-inch motor yacht combines the proven seaworthiness of the Grand Banks platform with a level of customization, mechanical integrity, and systems redundancy rarely encountered in production-class vessels of this size.

Propulsion, Performance & Range

Twin Caterpillar C-18 ACERT engines rated at 1,150 horsepower each deliver the performance envelope expected from a modern offshore cruiser. With 3,833 hours logged as of September 2025, these powerplants are supported by complete maintenance records and current oil sampling documentation. The vessel achieves a cruising speed of 19 knots at 80-percent load, with a maximum speed of 21.5 knots when conditions demand. The 2,800-gallon fuel capacity translates to 1,250-plus nautical miles of range at 10 knots with a 10-percent reserve—a capability proven by non-stop transatlantic passages from Newport, Rhode Island to Palm Beach, Florida completed in 77 hours.

Twin Disc MGX5135A transmissions with 2.52:1 reduction gearing drive Sea Torque shaft systems equipped with spare bearing and fluid kits carried onboard. Glendinning engine controls with wired remotes operate from both the pilothouse and lower helm station, enabling full-throttle docking capability from either position. Bow and stern thrusters—Naiad 38-horsepower and 25-horsepower units respectively—provide the maneuvering precision essential for single-captain operation in confined waters.

Power Generation & Energy Systems

Dual Onan MDKDR 21.5-kilowatt gensets (5,665 port and 5,721 starboard hours as of September 2025) ensure independent electrical generation. The vessel carries comprehensive battery architecture: AGM Lifeline engine batteries, AGM Lifeline service and inverter batteries, and wet-cell generator batteries, all managed by Mastervolt 24-volt and 12-volt chargers. A Mastervolt Mass Combi 24/4000 charger-inverter rated at 100 amps provides auxiliary power conditioning, while a dedicated 9-kilowatt 110-volt air-conditioning unit serves the master cabin independently from generator operation—allowing all-night cooling at anchor via inverter power without engine startup.

The electrical infrastructure includes an ASEA Power Systems AC12 transformer accepting 170 to 520 volts at 50 or 60 hertz and outputting 120/240 volts, alongside a JBT step-up transformer. Six Renogy 200-watt flexible solar panels with Mastervolt SCM60 MPPT controller complement the power generation suite, while Starlink satellite communication and a Bullet WiFi antenna with Alfa Network router provide connectivity throughout offshore passages.

Mechanical Systems & Redundancy

Hydraulic propulsion components throughout—including the bow and stern thrusters, dual windlass, and crane—prioritize reliability over the cost-cutting electric alternatives found in lesser vessels. The Naiad 302 stabilizer system with dual actuators significantly reduces roll in beam seas, a critical feature for extended offshore cruising comfort.

Fresh water systems feature a 22-millimeter, 3/4-inch household-grade plumbing infrastructure driven by 60-PSI pressure with backup capability. An

DASH was designed, built, and maintained to create the ultimate owner-operated offshore-capable cruising vessel. The vessel is actually a true LOA of 77' 4" (77 feet and 4 inches) and you can feel this size when you are onboard. Twin Caterpillar C-18 A-cert A-rated engines with 1150hp each give DASH the ability to top twenty knots if weather or schedule demands, but she also has the fuel efficiency to complete an offshore run from Newport RI to Palm Beach, FL non-stop in 77 hours. Fuel capacity is 2,800 gallons, giving you 1,250+ miles of range at 10 kts with 10% reserve. Top cruise 19 kts at 80% load, with a top speed of 21.5 kts. This is not a production-level GB 72...only the very top-level rated craftsmen were let onboard to execute their various tasks. The electricians, plumbers, carpenters and varnishers: only the very best craftsmen in the factory were allowed to become part of this build. That same exacting standard has been brought to the maintenance program, with a nearly unattainable level of attention to detail. All systems onboard are currently in top shape. Every aspect of DASH’s layout was custom designed to maximize efficiency and use of space to translate into absolute luxury within the 72 foot size envelope. The master has a king-size berth with his and hers heads connected by a full-size shower with 60-PSI water pressure. The salon boasts a lovely formal dining table layout. The pilothouse has a gourmet chef's galley and a rider bench with fold-out table for friends, family or crew to enjoy the longer runs. The lower station is a completely viable station to run from at any speed, including docking. The flybridge boasts a top-of-the-line new enclosure elevating this space onboard and also has twin grills, additional icemaker and a very open social seating layout. There is a large captain's quarters with private access for deliveries and longer runs which occasionally require assistance; this space doubles as storage. These are just a few of the highlights which embody the special nature of this offering. DASH has brought her owners all through the far Bahamas and New England. She is currently berthed in Newport, Rhode Island. DASH was designed to be easily run as an owner-operator vessel but also has space for captain/crew assistance; enough space for support but easily managed by two people. To follow is a list of the upgraded equipment in just the past two years of ownership; a full $200,000+ invested in making her truly ready for her next owners to enjoy reliable cruising on board.  C-Clear Plastic Forward Enclosure for Flybridge New extension cylinder for Steelhead Marine crane New Siren Remote Monitoring System New Furuno MFDs in both main helm (Furuno TZT22X 22" TZtouchXL MFD)  and flybridge (Furuno NavNet TZtouch3 16” MFD) New Radar (Furuno DRS12ANXT/6 Radar Pedestal 6’ Array) New FLIR New Airmar Wind Instruments New Mastervolt Chargemaster Plus 24V Charger Replaced all Batteries Replaced Underwater Lights with LED Replaced gypsies for Muir Anchor Windlass New custom anchor bridles New ACR EPIRB New Winslow 8-man liferaft Added 6 solar panels (Renogy 200 W flexible panels) and battery controller screen (Mastervolt SCM60 MPPT-MB Controller)

A lower station, accessible via a curved companionway from the starboard forward corner of the pilothouse, provides a completely viable helm position for any speed, including docking. This redundant helm capability is a hallmark of serious offshore cruising yachts and provides flexibility for owner-operator or captain-assisted passages. Port and starboard submarine-style doors allow quick access to the side decks from the pilothouse, supporting efficient deck operations and safety protocols.
Galley and Interior Amenities
The galley is positioned forward of the pilothouse with a near-surround of glass, creating an open, flowing sensation despite being below the main deck. Equipment includes a five-burner Miele electric induction cooktop, a Miele microwave-convection oven, a Miele dishwasher, and six SubZero refrigerator and freezer units providing extensive food storage. A portable Instant Vortex Plus air fryer and portable induction burner are available for inverter operation, adding flexibility for meal preparation. Storage is abundant, with custom overhead folding dish lockers designed to maximize both galley views and storage capacity. The formal dining area is positioned forward of the galley with a generous L-shaped settee upholstered in cream-colored leather, complemented by two custom teak and leather dining chairs. The dining table features the same mega-yacht styling as the cockpit table, with stainless steel supports and solid teak construction. A bar and china storage cabinet are positioned opposite the dining settee to starboard, with the main electrical panels and service access nearby. Forward of the dining area is a custom display cabinet and additional storage.
Salon Layout and Seating
The salon is the social heart of the vessel, featuring a large L-shaped settee along the starboard side upholstered in cream-colored leather. Two moveable coffee tables and two swiveling barrel chairs are positioned to port, creating flexible seating arrangements for entertaining or relaxing at anchor. An entertainment center is custom-built into the port bulkhead. The sole is solid teak planking with a holly accent around the perimeter, protected in the majority of the area by a custom-cut matching cream-colored carpet. All cabinetry is solid teak with traditional raised-panel design, featuring dead-bolt style catches for safety. Two end table cabinets at the aft portion of the salon provide quick access to frequently needed items from both inside and the aft cockpit area. The salon is accessed through Advantec double sliding doors, and a large inch-and-a-half-thick bullnose varnished teak table sits in front of the forward-facing settee, supported by mega-yacht style stainless steel legs. The interior lighting is provided by Foresti & Suardi exterior deck lights and Hella courtesy lights, creating an inviting ambiance throughout the day and evening.
