2016 Wally Wallypower 52 ILLEGAL: A Purpose-Built Waterjet Cruiser with Italian Design and Maine Heritage
Overview
The 2016 Wally Wallypower 52, *ILLEGAL*, represents a singular interpretation of modern yacht design—a 50-foot composite cruiser engineered specifically for fast, elegant coastal exploration with the shallow-draft capability and responsive handling that only waterjet propulsion delivers. Built for an accomplished yachtsman with deep roots in Maine's Hinckley boating tradition, this vessel combines cutting-edge Italian styling with advanced composite construction and a propulsion system chosen deliberately to eliminate running gear and unlock shallow-water access throughout New England's most protected anchorages. Wally Yachts, the Italian builder known for high-performance composite vessels and distinctive modern aesthetics, crafted *ILLEGAL* as a day cruiser and weekend escape with genuine overnight accommodations—a design philosophy that prioritizes speed, maneuverability, and accessible comfort over sprawling cabin volume. Her twin Volvo Penta D11 diesel engines, each producing 725 horsepower, drive an MJP Hybrid 300 waterjet system that has been refined through approximately 430 hours of operation. The result is a yacht capable of 45-knot maximum speed with a cruising range optimized for the 30-knot sweet spot where fuel efficiency and sea-keeping balance effectively. What distinguishes *ILLEGAL* from conventional sportcruisers in her class is the deliberate choice of waterjet propulsion—a decision rooted in the owner's familiarity with Hinckley Picnic Boats and their legendary waterjet systems in shallow Maine waters. That engineering choice eliminated the conventional shaft-and-prop running gear entirely, delivering a draft of just 2.67 feet and the kind of dock maneuverability that makes her accessible to anchorages and mooring fields where conventional yachts cannot venture. Her carbon-fiber and e-glass composite construction keeps weight low and structural strength high, supporting the dynamic performance envelope while maintaining the refined ride quality expected of a Wally design. Maintained continuously since delivery by Hinckley Yacht Services in Southwest Harbor, Maine, *ILLEGAL* is being offered only because the owner has taken delivery of a larger vessel. She is currently stored in a heated building and requires commissioning before returning to the water.
Construction and Hull Design
*ILLEGAL*'s composite construction reflects Wally's engineering philosophy and the owner's demand for a lightweight, durable hull capable of sustained high-speed performance without the weight penalty of traditional displacement designs. The hull and deck are infused carbon fiber and e-glass, a layup strategy that maximizes strength-to-weight ratio while providing the impact resistance necessary for Maine's rocky coastlines and variable sea conditions. The hull received a custom Awlgrip finish in "Illegal Gray" during 2018, applied to both the hull sides and the pilothouse structure, creating a cohesive visual identity that reflects the owner's aesthetic preferences. Black Widow bottom paint protects the underwater surfaces. This attention to finish detail is typical of owner-maintained Wally yachts, where the marriage of performance and visual refinement is non-negotiable. The hull design itself—with its shallow draft and waterjet propulsion—represents a fundamental departure from conventional sportcruiser architecture. The absence of running gear on the bottom eliminates the vulnerability of props, shafts, and struts to grounding, fouling, and impact damage. The waterjet's intake and discharge are engineered to operate efficiently in shallow water, and the closed-loop system minimizes exposure to marine debris. For a Maine coastal cruiser, this design choice is transformative: it enables access to anchorages and mooring fields that would otherwise be off-limits to deeper-draft vessels.
Deck Layout and Seamanship Design
*ILLEGAL*'s deck is organized around the philosophy of open-air entertaining and easy crew movement. The wide, uncluttered deck plan features an open transom design that simplifies stern boarding and provides ample space for guests to move safely. Teak decking covers the aft and side decks, cockpit, and the generous bow seating area, offering both aesthetic warmth and practical slip resistance. The bow area is anchored by a large, U-shaped seating arrangement with a three-stage telescoping pedestal table that converts the space into a sun lounge—a design element typical of Wally's European sensibility, where daytime entertaining often takes priority over below-deck cabin volume. Tall bulwarks provide weather protection and safety, with recessed cleats positioned along the bow, stern, and midships for clean-lined deck hardware. Fender attachment bases are similarly recessed into the bulwark structure, eliminating unsightly protrusions. The forward anchor locker is accessed through a flush hatch and houses a stainless steel pivoting anchor bracket that stores inboard when not in use. A large forepeak area below the forward hatch provides additional chain storage and access to the bow thruster compartment. Storage lockers under the forward seating accommodate cushions and gear, while three substantial storage lockers in the aft cockpit provide space for fenders, lines, and deck equipment. The transom features a removable stainless steel swim ladder, and drop doors in the aft coamings provide access to shore power, a hot/cold fresh water deck shower, the manual emergency bilge pump, and the remote jet control system interface. A large lazarette with a flush hatch opens to the aft end of the engine room, facilitating maintenance and inspection.
Pilothouse and Interior Architecture
The pilothouse is *ILLEGAL*'s signature interior space—a glass-enclosed helm and social zone that prioritizes visibility, weather protection, and the kind of casual entertaining that defines successful coastal cruising. The design employs a galley-up layout, positioning the galley to port and the helm station to starboard, with a companionway forward leading to the main cabin. The pilothouse roof pivots aft at the push of a button, allowing fresh air circulation without full exposure to the elements. Large glass side windows and forward windows maximize visibility, and heavy-duty pantograph windshield wipers ensure clear sightlines in rain. LED overhead lighting provides efficient illumination, and a removable Eisenglass aft curtain can be deployed for protection or removed for open-air operation. The galley, though compact, is thoroughly equipped for cruising and entertaining. Dual Vitrifrigo drawer refrigerators and freezers provide cold storage, while a Foster two-burner induction cooktop integrates seamlessly into the countertop. A Vitrifrigo icemaker supplies fresh ice, and a satin-finished undermounted stainless steel sink with hot/cold pull-up faucet handles dishwashing and food preparation. Abundant drawer and locker storage keeps provisions and galley equipment organized and accessible. A U-shaped dinette with oiled teak table and stainless steel telescoping base provides seating for four to six, with fold-out leaves that expand the table for entertaining. Abundant storage in lockers beneath the seating accommodates cushions, gear, and seasonal equipment. A utility room under the helm offers additional storage for cushions and miscellaneous items. The main cabin, accessed through the forward companionway, features a convertible seating area that transforms into a berth, providing sleeping accommodations for a couple or small family. An attached head compartment includes a separate shower stall, essential for multi-day cruising. Teak decking throughout the pilothouse and cabin maintains visual continuity and provides the warm, finished aesthetic that Wally designs are known for.
Helm Station and Electronics Integration
The helm station is finished in oiled teak and carbon fiber, creating a sophisticated interface between the operator and the yacht's complex systems. The carbon housing contains Raymarine Axiom displays, a Garmin/Volvo engine display, and control buttons for various mechanical and electrical functions. This integrated approach—combining navigation, engine monitoring, and system controls in a single, ergonomic workspace—reflects modern marine electronics design and Wally's commitment to operator comfort. The electronics suite is contemporary and comprehensive. Twin Raymarine Axiom XL 16 chartplotter/radar displays (installed 2023) provide redundant navigation capability and exceptional situational awareness. A Raymarine CP370 processor manages the system architecture, while a Raymarine 4kW 18-inch color radome radar offers detailed weather and sea-state information. The Raymarine AIS650 AIS transceiver enables vessel tracking and collision avoidance in busy waters. Navigation is supported by a Simrad AP70 autopilot, capable of maintaining course and executing waypoint sequences with precision. A Garmin GPSMap 7612 touch screen engine control display provides real-time monitoring of engine parameters and allows remote adjustment of throttle and trim functions.
