Our Thoughts

The 2024 Zeelander Z5 represents a thoughtfully engineered approach to modern Downeast cruising, built with the care and attention to detail that distinguishes European yacht construction. This is Hull #7 of Zeelander's newest model line—a 48-foot express cruiser that competes directly with established names like Hinckley, Sabre, Palm Beach, and MJM through a combination of refined design, intelligent systems integration, and purposeful customization.

Powered by twin Volvo IPS 650 engines delivering 960 total horsepower, the Z5 achieves a cruising speed of 27 knots with a maximum speed of 31 knots, delivering the performance characteristics expected in this segment while maintaining fuel efficiency through Volvo's advanced inboard pod-drive propulsion system. The IPS package includes electronic steering, joystick control, and comprehensive engine monitoring through a Volvo glass bridge integration—features that simplify single-handed operation and provide real-time system visibility from the helm.

The hull design reflects serious offshore thinking. Core-infused sandwich construction with stringers and transverse bulkheads ensures structural rigidity, while a Vinylester hull skin resists osmotic blistering. The 3.08-foot draft suits coastal exploration and river cruising, and Volvo trim tabs provide dynamic trim control for varied sea conditions. Active stabilization comes courtesy of a Seakeeper 6 gyro and dynamic positioning system, technologies that meaningfully reduce motion and fatigue on extended passages.

The wheelhouse delivers 360-degree visibility through expansive wraparound glass, with a double helm chair, full Garmin glass bridge navigation package, and Volvo electronic controls centralized at the command station. A 32-inch smart TV on a power lift mechanism serves both wheelhouse and aft deck viewing, while the seating area accommodates eight to ten guests for dining and entertainment. Aft windows operate electrically, and an electric sliding roof enhances ventilation and connection with the surrounding water.

Below deck, the accommodation plan includes a full master stateroom with queen berth, en-suite bathroom, and vanity desk, plus a guest cabin with double bed and private head access. Both cabins feature 24-inch smart TVs, and the master benefits from blackout blinds and white upholstered bedding with blue stitching. The day head provides a secondary freshwater facility. Throughout the interior, Zeelander's Nautical Décor scheme combines diamond-stitched upholstery, Macassar high-gloss wood accents, white lacquer surfaces, and teak wood trim—a cohesive aesthetic that avoids the sterile feel of many production yachts.

The galley is fully equipped with a combi oven, dual-zone induction cooktop, 100-liter refrigerator, 35-liter freezer, and Corian countertops with integrated sink. An additional 95-liter refrigerator in the lobby, ice maker on the aft deck, and a combi washer/dryer machine address the practical needs of extended cruising. Fresh water capacity of 158 gallons and fuel capacity of 528 gallons support meaningful range without constant refueling or watering stops.

Topside, the design emphasizes both function and leisure. The full walkaround cockpit features side boarding doors on both port and starboard, eliminating the need to climb over railings when docking or boarding. The swim platform incorporates a hydraulic-controlled design with integrated manual swim ladder and handrails, while a

Noochette: Modernized Downeast Luxury Motor Yacht with Twin Volvo IPS Power The 2024 Zeelander Z5 represents a refined evolution of classic Downeast design, merging traditional seagoing aesthetics with contemporary European engineering and interior luxury. Hull #7 of this new model line, A. Noochette, is a custom-built motor yacht finished in Ferrari Blu Pozzi hull paint with Zeelander's White Pearlescent superstructure. Delivered in May 2024 to Naples , Florida, this 48-foot yacht has been lightly used in protected west coast waters and maintains low engine hours with completed factory and pre-delivery surveys.
Overview: Design and Build Philosophy
The Zeelander Z5 occupies a distinct market position among semi-custom European motor yachts, drawing comparison to established American builders such as Hinckley , Sabre , Eastbay, MJM , and Palm Beach . The design philosophy emphasizes a modernized Downeast profile—a hull form known for seaworthiness, comfort in a seaway, and classic proportions—enhanced with advanced construction techniques and contemporary systems integration. Built in the Netherlands by Zeelander, the Z5 employs a core-infused sandwich vinylester hull stiffened with stringers supported by transverse bulkheads and floors. This construction methodology reduces weight while increasing rigidity and impact resistance. The superstructure follows similar principles, with sandwich deck construction supported by bulkheads and frames. All exterior decking, steps, swim platform, and cockpit surfaces are finished in composite teak, eliminating the maintenance burden of traditional teak while preserving aesthetic continuity. The hull bottom receives anti-fouling paint and is protected by zinc anode cathodic protection. Bronze seacocks equip all underwater through-hull fittings, and a stainless steel rub rail runs the full perimeter. Volvo Trim Tabs provide dynamic hull attitude adjustment, enhancing ride quality and fuel efficiency across speed ranges.
Wheelhouse and Helm Station
The wheelhouse exemplifies the Z5's commitment to visibility and modern helm ergonomics. Expansive 360-degree curved wraparound glazing provides panoramic views in all directions, critical for safe navigation and situational awareness. The design integrates natural light and connection to the surrounding seascape while maintaining structural integrity through advanced window engineering. Helm operations center on a double helm chair with backrest that converts to dining seating, positioned for optimal sight lines to all quadrants. The Volvo IPS propulsion system employs electric steering, two lever controls, and a joystick for precision maneuvering in confined spaces. Keyless ignition simplifies startup procedures. The dashboard consolidates system control switches, engine monitoring displays, trim tab controls, and a compass. A. Noochette is equipped with a full Garmin Glass Bridge navigation package featuring a 17-inch primary display and an additional 17-inch screen for complete glass bridge capability. Garmin HD digital GMR18-inch radar provides target detection and weather imaging. Garmin digital side and down-view sonar integrates bottom profiling and fish-finding capability. A 19X high-sensitivity GPS ensures precise positioning, while AIS 800 receiver displays traffic from equipped vessels. Garmin remote control via smartphone extends helm functionality to the deck. VHF radio with antenna occupies the helm position for marine communications. An electric sliding roof in the wheelhouse offers ventilation and open-air connection when desired. Ceiling-mounted 32-inch Smart TV on a power lift mechanism serves the wheelhouse and aft deck, supporting entertainment and system monitoring.
Propulsion and Performance
Twin Volvo IPS 650 diesel engines deliver 480 horsepower each, combining for 960 total horsepower. IPS (Inboard Performance System) propulsion integrates the engine, gearbox, and propeller into a single pod unit, eliminating traditional shaft and strut drag while improving efficiency and maneuverability. Duo-prop propellers optimize thrust distribution. The Z5 achieves a cruising speed of 27 knots and a maximum speed of 31 knots, delivering performance suitable for extended cruising and opportunistic passages. Fuel capacity of 528 gallons supports extended range, while 158 gallons of fresh water capacity sustains multi-day cruising. A 9 kW generator at 60 Hz and 120 VAC provides independent electrical power for air conditioning, galley appliances, and hotel loads when anchored or docked. Engine room access is provided through a hydraulic-driven hatch in the main deck. Sound insulation bulkheads and ceiling minimize mechanical noise throughout the yacht. Engine exhaust silencers mounted on resilient mounts further reduce vibration and noise transmission. Racor diesel filters protect the fuel system, while automatic bilge pumps serve each bilge compartment with high-level alarms at the navigation bridge.
Stabilization and Comfort
Zeelander has equipped A. Noochette with advanced motion control systems designed to enhance comfort in a seaway. A Seakeeper 6 active gyro stabilizer counters roll motion through gyroscopic force, significantly reducing heel and improving interior comfort. The system operates independently of vessel motion and requires no external fins or appendages. A Masterlock Active boat stabilization system provides complementary motion damping. Dynamic positioning capability, while not typically employed during cruising, offers precision station-keeping during anchoring or entertainment activities. These systems work in concert with the Z5's hull design—specifically its Downeast profile with moderate deadrise and full bow sections—to deliver what Zeelander characterizes as one of the most comfortable rides in the class. The combination of hull form, advanced stabilization, and extra-quiet sound insulation creates an environment where motion is minimized and mechanical noise is suppressed.
Cockpit and Deck Design
The main deck cockpit is designed as an entertainment platform with a full walkaround layout enabling safe passage around the entire perimeter. Port and starboard boarding doors with integrated umbrella storage facilitate guest boarding and departure. The cockpit features a self-draining design with washdown outlets for maintenance and deck cleaning. A U-lounge with L-seat configuration on the aft deck provides expansive seating for entertaining or relaxation. An electrically controlled table converts to a lounger with infill cushion, adding flexibility to the space. An electrically controlled sun awning on the aft deck provides shade during daytime use. A large sunpad spans the bow deck, offering forward-facing lounging with unobstructed sightlines. The swim platform extends the aft section with sun lounges and is equipped with a hydraulic controlled design. A manually folding swim ladder with handrails integrates into the platform for safe water access. An emergency button on the platform enables opening from the water in emergency situations. All railings follow Zeelander design specifications in 316 stainless steel with oval profiles. Cleats, bollards, and fittings are stainless steel throughout. A stainless steel bow plate, roller, and anchor support ground tackle operations. The anchor windlass is remote-controlled, and a 50-meter chain with a polished 20-kilogram anchor is installed. Six mooring lines (5/8 inch by 30 feet with 12-inch eyes), four fenders with lines, and six fender covers with Zeelander logos complete the ground tackle and docking inventory. Deck lighting includes navigation lights, day shapes, and signal flags. Xenon headlights in Zeelander design provide forward illumination. Illuminated side logos on the superstructure add visual distinction. Underwater transom lights (12 units) create aesthetic ambiance and aid night operation.
Interior Design and Accommodations
The interior is finished in Zeelander's Nautical Décor scheme, featuring diamond-stitched upholstery, Macassar high-gloss wood, white lacquer, leather, and teak wood accents with blue fabric highlights throughout. This custom-ordered specification reflects the original owner's preferences for refined maritime aesthetics. Main Cabin (Master Stateroom): The master cabin features a queen-size bed with white upholstery and blue stitched backlight. Storage under the settee and lockers above provide stowage. Ceiling and wall coverings are fitted, with reading lights and AC power points throughout. A 24-inch built-in Smart TV with two speakers serves entertainment. A vanity desk with two closets provides grooming and storage space. Four large portholes and a lower deck Braun accent in teak veneer with Corian countertop and sink complete the space. Master cabin blinds offer privacy. An en-suite bathroom with hot and cold water mixer tap, Corian countertop, enclosed shower with glass door, and
