Our Thoughts

The 2009 Endeavour 40 Skylounge represents a distinctive chapter in trawler-cat design—a predecessor to the celebrated Endeavour 48 Skylounge that prioritizes cruising comfort, thoughtful layout, and extended-range capability. Only five of this model were built, making it a scarce find in today's market. This 40-foot vessel combines the economical twin-diesel propulsion and fuel efficiency characteristic of the Endeavour brand with a comprehensive modernization that elevates it well beyond its original 2009 specification.

The hull is a proven powercat design with a 16-foot beam and 3.5-foot draft, offering the shallow-water accessibility and fuel economy that appeal to serious cruisers. The twin Yanmar 6LPA/STP2 diesel engines deliver 315 horsepower each, paired with upgraded electronic throttles for synchronized operation. The 600-gallon fuel capacity supports extended coastal and inland waterway cruising, while the 150-gallon fresh water system and dual holding tanks (80 gallons each) provide the infrastructure for multi-week passages.

What sets this particular Endeavour apart is a substantial electrical systems upgrade that fundamentally changes the ownership experience. The original 12-volt house battery architecture has been replaced with a 48-volt lithium bank rated at 30 kWh capacity—a transformation that powers air conditioning, galley appliances, and hotel loads without requiring generator operation during daylight or light-load conditions. The system includes dual Quattro 5000 inverter/chargers, three 48-volt-to-12-volt converters, and an 8-kilowatt nominal alternator, along with an automatic generator startup function that prevents battery depletion. This configuration, combined with a Seawater Pro 40-GPH watermaker (48-volt motor) and a SunDanzer 48-volt high-efficiency freezer, reflects a genuine commitment to self-sufficient cruising.

The interior layout maximizes usable space across two staterooms and two heads. The master stateroom features a full queen island berth with walk-around access, abundant starboard-side storage, dual side windows with opening ports, and a separate en-suite head with full stall shower. The guest stateroom on the port side includes hanging locker and drawer storage, a flat-screen television, and its own en-suite head with shower. Both cabins employ 12-volt LED lighting and Tecma freshwater heads. A washer/dryer combination in the master quarters adds significant convenience for extended cruising.

The galley is genuinely gourmet-equipped for a 40-foot vessel. An island counter with double stainless steel sink and bar seating anchors the space, with Gibraltar countertops, abundant storage lockers, and a pantry featuring deep cabinets on both port and starboard sides. Recent additions include a Whynter ice maker, an induction cooktop, a Bosch microwave/oven, and a dishwasher—amenities that elevate daily life aboard. Two Isotherm refrigerator/freezers and an Isotherm hot water tank complete the provisioning infrastructure.

The defining feature of this Endeavour is the enclosed Skylounge—a full-beam salon with 360-degree visibility that serves as a second living space. The skylounge accommodates substantial gatherings around a new table top, with a U-shaped settee featuring ultraleather cushions aft, a large bench passenger seat to port, and a folding hi-lo pedestal table. 2009 Endeavour 40 Skylounge: A Rare TrawlerCat Built for Extended Cruising and Comfortable Coastal Exploration
Overview
The 2009 Endeavour 40 Skylounge represents a distinctive category within the trawler yacht market—a twin-diesel powercat designed for cruising families and serious waterway explorers who prioritize comfort, stability, and extended range. Only five examples of this model were built, making it a genuinely uncommon find in the used market. Located in Baltimore, Maryland, this particular vessel, named *inQuest*, has been substantially upgraded with modern marine technology and lithium power systems that fundamentally change how the boat operates during extended anchored stays. At 40 feet in length with a 16-foot beam and 3.5-foot draft, the Skylounge occupies a practical sweet spot for cruising—large enough to accommodate two staterooms and two heads with genuine comfort, yet shallow-drafted enough to access rivers, shallow bays, and anchorages that larger yachts cannot reach. The catamaran hull form provides the stability and fuel efficiency expected from displacement-speed cruising vessels, while the enclosed skylounge and protected deck layout reflect thoughtful design for variable weather and the extended time owners spend aboard during cruises.
Layout and Deck Design
The Endeavour 40 Skylounge's layout prioritizes accessibility and flow across a limited footprint. Forward deck access is straightforward—a Dutch door from the salon provides direct egress to the foredeck, where corner seating and bow railings create a natural gathering area. The wide side walkways facilitate safe movement along the hull, and the transom area is thoughtfully arranged for dinghy davit storage and boarding. An aft deck access door from the salon creates a private outdoor space, while the forward upper deck corner seating offers guests an additional vantage point underway. The enclosed skylounge functions as a second salon with 360-degree visibility through large windows and a folding hi-lo table for dining, cards, or socializing. Textaline window covers manage sun and glare, while a Dutch door provides access to the forward upper deck. Below, the main salon features light wood interior with satin finish and bamboo flooring, connecting to the galley and creating the primary living space. Two separate staterooms—a master forward with a queen island berth and a guest cabin on the port side—each include en-suite heads, opening ports, and dedicated storage, allowing cruising couples and their guests genuine privacy and comfort.
Cabin and Interior Accommodations
The master stateroom centers on a fully walk-around queen island berth with abundant starboard-side storage, two side windows with shades, and two opening ports with shades. A separate en-suite head includes a large stall shower, vanity with mirror, and storage, while 12-volt LED lighting throughout provides efficient ambient and task lighting. The guest stateroom on the port side offers a hanging locker, drawer storage, and a flat-screen television, with its own en-suite head featuring a stall shower, vanity, and mirror. Both cabins include opening ports and window shades for ventilation and privacy control. The galley represents a significant functional upgrade area. An island counter with double stainless steel sink and bar stool seating anchors the space, while custom Gibraltar countertops and extensive lockers provide storage. Above and below the induction cooktop, additional galley storage accommodates provisions for extended cruises. A Whynter ice maker, large SunDanzer high-efficiency freezer, and two Isotherm refrigerator/freezers ensure food preservation capacity, while a Bosch microwave/oven and induction cooktop support meal preparation. A dishwasher eliminates manual cleanup, and pantry storage on both sides of the galley and salon maximizes dry-goods capacity. The salon features abundant storage, including lockers and under-stair compartments, complemented by large opening windows with custom blinds. Sonos speakers in the salon and skylounge provide audio distribution, while Cruise Air air conditioning controls manage climate. A new captain's chair at the helm and silicone upholstery in the skylounge reflect recent comfort upgrades.
Helm and Electronics
The helm station provides excellent forward visibility through the windshield and includes a comprehensive suite of modern electronics. A Garmin chartplotter serves as the primary navigation interface, supported by Doppler radar with color indication of converging and diverging paths—critical for night navigation and monitoring approaching weather. A 6-inch binnacle compass provides redundant heading reference, while a new low-light Sionyx Nighthawk camera enhances situational awareness in reduced visibility conditions. Two VHF radios with antennas ensure reliable communication, while AIS B+ with a separate antenna provides extended-range vessel tracking and automatic identification at higher speeds. A Starlink HP antenna and Peplink router deliver modern connectivity options, supported by cellular antennas for backup communication. The navigation station includes hydraulic steering via a Hynautic system and a 12-volt control panel managing electrical loads. A spotlight assists with nighttime navigation and docking. Hinged radar and antenna mounts reduce air draft to below 17 feet when lowered, important for bridge clearance on river systems.
Power and Propulsion
Twin Yanmar 6LPA/STP2 diesel engines, each rated at 315 horsepower, provide the primary propulsion. Upgraded electronic throttles with engine synchronization ensure smooth, coordinated acceleration and cruising. Dual Racor filters on the mains protect the engines, while fuel flow sensors monitor consumption, and exhaust gas temperature monitors provide real-time engine health data. Digital engine data displayed at the helm allows continuous monitoring of operating parameters. A Northern Lights 9-kilowatt diesel generator supplies 120/240-volt AC power for air conditioning, galley appliances, and hotel loads when the main engines are not running. A 50-amp shore power system connects to dock power when available, while a 2x 5000-watt inverter/battery charger system provides emergency AC power from house batteries. The fuel capacity of 600 gallons supports extended cruising ranges typical of trawler yachts, while the 150-gallon fresh water capacity accommodates extended anchored stays. Dual 80-gallon black water holding tanks with level indicators, macerators, and replaced vent lines ensure proper waste management, while replaced overboard discharge lines and fresh-water anchor wash systems reflect maintenance focus.
Power Management and Lithium House System
The most significant upgrade to this vessel involves the conversion from a 12-volt house battery system to a 48-volt lithium house battery bank with 30-kilowatt power capacity. Two Quattro 5000 inverter/chargers and three 48-volt to 12-volt converters manage power distribution, while a 48-volt 8-kilowatt nominal alternator charges the system underway. Solar panels contribute supplemental charging during daylight hours, reducing generator run time. This upgrade fundamentally changes the cruising experience. Extended anchored stays no longer require constant generator operation to power air conditioning or galley appliances—the lithium battery bank stores sufficient energy to run the Cruise Air air conditioning system, dishwasher, ice maker, and induction cooktop for hours without engine or generator support. An automatic generator startup system ensures batteries never deplete completely, providing fail-safe backup power management. A Seawater Pro 40-gallon-per-hour watermaker with 48-volt motor, spare membrane, and media filter tank extends water independence during cruises, while a whole-boat water filtration system ensures potable water quality. Hot water is provided by an Isotherm hot water tank, supporting both galley and head operations.
Mechanical and Systems Infrastructure
The cooling and climate control systems include Marineaire AC units controlled through a Cruise Air interface, maintaining comfortable cabin temperatures in warm climates. Raritan Marine Elegance heads provide reliable freshwater sanitation, supported by a 12-volt freshwater system with hot and cold distribution throughout the vessel. Marineland through-hulls and seacocks minimize corrosion concerns. Bilge management includes dry bilge pumps and automatic bilge pump backup, while Tides shaft seal temperature monitors and exhaust gas temperature monitors provide early warning of mechanical issues. Engine access hatches facilitate routine maintenance and inspection. The anchor system includes a 48-volt anchor windlass with gypsy and an 85-pound Mantus anchor, supporting confident anchoring in varying bottom conditions. A raw water anchor wash system preserves fresh water while cleaning the anchor and chain.
Dinghy and Boarding
The vessel carries a rigid fiberglass dinghy—a hard dinghy rather than an inflatable—that offers significant advantages for extended cruising. The hard dinghy is inherently unsinkable and does not require regular inflation maintenance. Importantly
