Our Thoughts

GiGi represents a thoroughly reimagined 2009 Grand Banks 47 Heritage CL—one of only 13 classic models ever built and the first to undergo a comprehensive RestoMod transformation. Originally designed by Sparkman & Stephens on a proven planing hull, this 47-foot trawler yacht has been completely reconfigured and repowered in 2024-2025 under the guidance of noted Passagemaker author Frank Scavone, with the work documented in multiple publications covering its restoration and coastal cruising operations.

Performance & Propulsion

The vessel now operates with twin 2024 Cummins QSC 8.3 engines rated at 600 horsepower each—a 50-horsepower increase over the original powerplants. This repowering delivers a comfortable cruising speed of 20+ knots at 85% engine load, with a maximum speed of 26 knots. The drive system received comprehensive attention: all shafts have been realigned, cutlass bearings and shaft seals replaced, and propellers recut, balanced, and repitched. A new Onan 13.5 kW generator supports the vessel's systems, while dual Racor fuel filters and a single generator filter ensure clean fuel delivery. The 600-gallon fuel capacity and 260-gallon water capacity support extended cruising, and the fuel tanks were professionally polished and cleaned in 2026. A Newman PT 80 battery charger and six AGM batteries provide reliable 12-volt power, while a Xantrex 2500-watt inverter supplies 110-volt circuits throughout.

Deck & Exterior

The exterior showcases a complete teak and stainless steel refresh. Non-skid Awlgrip decks were refinished in 2024, and all teak trim—including new toe rails, transom rails, and custom canvas covers—has been rebuilt or revarnished. A custom hydraulic TNT swim platform with integrated lift mechanism facilitates easy storage and launch of the included 2025 ULT300 tender with 9.8-horsepower Tohatsu outboard, both finished in Grand Banks white. The mast retracts mechanically in minutes, accommodating Great Loop navigation. Deck equipment includes dual anchor systems (Ultra 27-60 lb with 200 feet of all-chain rode and CQR 60 lb with mixed rode), stainless steel cleats and hause holes, a Revere 6-person offshore liferaft (certified March 2025), and hot and cold transom showers. A side-power bow thruster aids maneuvering, while the redesigned engine room soft patch is now an insulated hatch providing full and easy access to mechanical systems.

Flybridge

The expansive flybridge seats six under full Bimini coverage and features two oversized STIDD pedestal helm chairs with factory Ultraleather cushions, newly upholstered in 2024. Additional seating includes an L-shaped settee and straight settee, also reupholstered, with storage beneath. A fold-out teak-inlayed dining table on pedestal, forward-facing bench seat, and fiberglass cabinet with refrigerator, shelves, and sink support entertaining and dining. The 2024 windshield protects the helm area, while a Himalaya console lowers for electronic protection. Garmin electronics (installed 2022) are integrated throughout, and a teak-rimmed stainless steel ship's wheel

2009 Grand Banks 47 Heritage CL: A Completely Reimagined Fast Trawler Ready for Extended Cruising
Overview
The 2009 Grand Banks 47 Heritage CL represents one of only 13 examples of this acclaimed Classic model ever built, and GiGi stands apart as the first comprehensive "RestoMod" transformation of the design. Originally delivered with the proven Sparkman & Stephens planing hull that Grand Banks introduced in 2007 to meet demand for faster trawlers, this 47-footer has undergone a complete mechanical and interior reconfiguration during 2024 and 2025 that positions it as a thoroughly modern cruising platform while preserving the timeless elegance and seaworthiness of the Grand Banks heritage. The vessel's transformation began with a comprehensive repowering in June 2024. Twin Cummins QSC 8.3 engines, each producing 600 horsepower, replace the original 550-horsepower powerplants, delivering a meaningful increase in both cruising capability and top-end performance. The new engines facilitate a comfortable cruising speed of 23 miles per hour at 85 percent engine load, with a maximum speed of 29.7 miles per hour—a notable improvement that does not compromise the fuel efficiency and range that define the trawler category. Supporting these engines are completely renewed drive systems, including freshly aligned shafts, new cutlass bearings, shaft seals, and reconditioned and re-pitched propellers, all completed in 2024. Beyond propulsion, GiGi's 2024–2025 refit encompasses a new 13.5-kilowatt Onan generator, completely redesigned engine room soft patch configured as an insulated hatch for full and easy access, four-zone Dometic HVAC air conditioning, Starlink satellite internet connectivity, professionally refinished non-skid decks in Awlgrip, and a comprehensive renewal of all interior furnishings, upholstery, mattresses, headliners, and carpeting. The vessel has been featured in multiple articles chronicling its restoration and cruising activities along the eastern seaboard and Bahamas , and the work was overseen by Frank Scavone, an accomplished marine author and Passagemaker contributor. This documented history of thoughtful, expert restoration adds credibility to the quality of the transformation.
Layout and Deck Design
The 47 Heritage CL's layout reflects Grand Banks' signature approach to live-aboard comfort, with distinct spaces designed for both efficient operation and leisurely cruising. Entry to the main deck is via an aft port-side door that opens directly into the salon, establishing a natural flow through the vessel's social and operational heart. The salon occupies the central main deck, featuring a large L-shaped settee to starboard and a comfortable barrel chair with ottoman to port. An extendable high-low teak table positioned inboard of the settee converts easily between dining configuration and coffee-table use, supporting both formal meals and casual relaxation. A custom teak leaf desk and writing chair, integrated with the Starlink system, transforms a portion of the salon into a functional office for remote work—a practical consideration for long-range cruisers and liveaboards. The galley is positioned to port, mid-level, positioned two steps down from the salon and two steps up from the forward companionway. This U-shaped galley design offers excellent storage and workflow efficiency. Appliances include a Sharp Carousel microwave convection oven, a Subzero under-counter refrigerator, a separate stand-up under-counter freezer, and a Princess three-burner Ceran glass cooktop set into black granite countertops. A large pantry provides substantial dry storage, while multiple doored cabinets and pull-out drawers support organized provisioning for extended passages. The galley's Dometic exhaust hood vents cooking odors directly outside, and a Grohe faucet with pull-out sprayer supports food preparation and cleanup. The lower helm station is positioned opposite the galley, well integrated into the main deck layout and accessible via a side-deck door. An oversized STIDD pedestal helm chair, upholstered in Ultraleather, sits before a fully integrated electronics console designed for flush-mounted instrumentation and a modern, uncluttered presentation. The helm includes Teleflex gears and throttles for both engines, Cummins Vessel View displays providing analog and digital readouts with built-in fuel-use synchronization, a Ritchie compass, Xantrex 2500-watt inverter controls, and a Computank fuel, water, and battery monitoring system. Side-Power bow thruster controls, windlass controls, and Bennett trim tab controls are all organized within arm's reach. A center-opening windshield, flip-out footrest, and teak binocular holder complete the practical helm arrangement. Exterior decks have been refinished in non-skid Awlgrip paint, and all steps, seats, and hatch covers have been rebuilt in solid teak. Custom canvas covers protect the finished toe rails and placards, and a custom canvas railing saddlebag ingeniously holds two folding Dahon bikes—a thoughtful provision for island exploration and dockside mobility. Stainless steel handrails, life lines, and grab bars throughout the deck provide secure movement, while stainless steel cleats, hawse holes, and fender holders support anchoring and docking operations. The mast folds down mechanically in minutes, a configuration specifically engineered for Great Loopers navigating the bridge-height limitations of the Intracoastal Waterway. This feature, managed via an onboard davit system, eliminates the need for external assistance and allows passage through restricted waterways without delay.
Flybridge and Upper Helm Station
The flybridge is expansive and fully covered, offering protection from sun and weather while maintaining open-air visibility. Two STIDD helm chairs with new factory cushions provide comfortable seating for both watch-keeping and relaxation, and both chairs are fully adjustable for individual preference. The flybridge seats six in total, with an L-shaped settee and straight settee upholstered in Ultraleather, multiple storage compartments under all seating surfaces, and a fold-out teak-inlayed dining table on pedestal for al fresco entertaining. A fiberglass cabinet houses a refrigerator, shelves, and sink, supporting drink service and light food preparation while anchored or at the dock. A full-length bimini provides overhead protection, and a 2024 windshield upgrade further enhances weather protection and visibility. Garmin electronics are integrated into the flybridge helm, and a 110-volt plug-in with protective cover supports device charging and small appliance use. A teak-rimmed stainless steel ship's wheel serves as both functional steering backup and visual centerpiece, while a Himalaya console lowers into the helm to protect electronics from weather when the vessel is unattended.
Helm and Electronics
GiGi's electronics suite, installed in 2022, comprises a full suite of Garmin systems integrated across both the lower helm and flybridge stations. The Garmin ecosystem provides modern navigation, chartplotting, sonar integration, and autopilot capability, supporting safe passage and passage planning across varied cruising grounds. The lower helm's Cummins Vessel View displays deliver real-time engine performance data in both analog and digital formats, with built-in fuel-use calculation and engine synchronization features that optimize efficiency during long cruising days. The Onan generator panel displays generator status and load, while the Exalto windshield wiper and washer controls, fireboy fire suppression panel, and windlass controls are logically arranged for easy operation. The Starboard helm door includes lift-up step storage and a phantom screen, supporting fresh-air ventilation without insect intrusion. Starlink satellite internet connectivity, installed in 2024, provides reliable high-speed internet access anywhere within Starlink's global coverage, enabling real-time weather routing, remote work, video conferencing, and communication with family and shore-side support. For cruisers planning extended passages or time at remote anchorages, this capability represents a significant quality-of-life improvement.
Propulsion, Fuel, and Range
Twin 2024 Cummins QSC 8.3 engines, each rated at 600 horsepower, deliver the power and efficiency expected of a modern fast trawler. These engines are supported by completely renewed drive systems: freshly aligned shafts, new cutlass bearings, new shaft seals and stuffing boxes, and reconditioned and re-pitched propellers, all completed in June 2024. The vessel carries 600 gallons of fuel across two tanks, both replaced in 2024, and dual Racor fuel filters—a single filter serving the generator

What makes the 2009 Grand Banks 47 Heritage CL different from other trawler yachts in this size range?
The Grand Banks 47 Heritage CL is built on a Sparkman & Stephens planing hull, which distinguishes it from traditional displacement trawlers. Only 13 of these models were ever built, making it a rare design that combines the classic Grand Banks styling and interior craftsmanship with the performance characteristics of a modern planing hull. This hull design enables cruising speeds above 20 knots and a maximum speed of nearly 30 knots, while maintaining the spacious, comfortable interior layout that Grand Banks is known for. The planing hull allows the boat to move efficiently through the water at higher speeds compared to traditional trawler designs, making it suitable for owners who want both range and performance without sacrificing comfort.
What are the current engine specifications and how do they affect cruising performance?
GiGi is equipped with twin 2024 Cummins QSC 8.3 diesel engines rated at 600 horsepower each, which were installed in June 2024. These engines represent a 50-horsepower upgrade from the original powerplant and enable a comfortable cruising speed of 23 miles per hour at 85 percent engine load, with a maximum speed of 29.7 miles per hour. At cruising speed, the fuel consumption is efficient enough to support extended range cruising with the 600-gallon fuel capacity. The engines are paired with newly aligned shafts, new cutlass bearings, shaft seals, and reconditioned and re-pitched propellers, all completed in 2024, ensuring optimal performance and reliability.
Is this boat suitable for long-range cruising and what systems support extended voyages?
Yes, the Grand Banks 47 Heritage CL is specifically designed for long-range cruising. The 600-gallon fuel capacity combined with efficient twin diesel engines and a cruising speed of 20-plus knots provides excellent range for extended passages. The boat includes a 260-gallon water capacity and a 13.5-kilowatt Onan generator installed in 2024, which supplies power for the four-zone Dometic HVAC system, air conditioning, and all onboard systems when anchored or away from shore power. Additional cruising amenities include a 2024 Starlink system for continuous internet connectivity, making remote work and communication possible from anywhere. The boat also features two complete staterooms with ensuite heads, a well-equipped galley, and a flybridge, providing comfortable accommodations for extended periods away from the dock.

GiGi features a traditional Grand Banks full-beam aft master stateroom with a walk-around queen berth, ensuite head with a separate stall shower, walk-in hanging locker, and extensive storage throughout. Both staterooms have been completely updated with new mattresses, custom carpeting, and refreshed headliners in 2024 and 2025. The helm is well-integrated into the main deck layout with side-deck access via a starboard door with lift-up step storage and a phantom screen. The electronics console is designed for flush-mounted instrumentation with a clean, modern presentation, and includes a center-opening windshield with flip-out footrest for comfort. The flybridge helm offers an additional pair of extremely comfortable STIDD chairs, allowing the captain to choose between the lower helm for protected operation or the flybridge helm for open-air cruising. All helm controls are logically arranged for easy access, including engine controls, generator panel, trim tabs, windlass, and bow thruster.
