Our Thoughts

BLUE TANG is a 2007 Grand Banks 39 Eastbay SX—a time-proven coastal cruiser built on the platform that defined the modern Downeast trawler yacht. At 42.42 feet with a 13.25-foot beam and 3.33-foot draft, this vessel combines shallow-water capability with the seaworthiness expected from a C. Raymond Hunt deep-V hull design. The boat has been conscientiously maintained through Maine summers and protected winters, and she is currently undergoing a significant mechanical refresh that will enhance her next chapter of ownership.

The most significant recent investment is the repower with brand-new 2026 Yanmar 6LY440 diesel engines—twin 440-horsepower common-rail units with electronic controls and ZF transmissions. This upgrade delivers quiet, efficient propulsion with modern emissions compliance and will be accompanied by new engine warranties. The new powerplants, paired with 5-bladed bronze propellers, 2-inch stainless steel shafts with dripless seals, and freshly trued shafts and cutlass bearings, promise reliable performance for years ahead. Twin-screw configuration with a 12-volt bow thruster in tunnel ensures excellent maneuverability in tight quarters, while the traditional engine controls and Hynautic hydraulic steering system provide intuitive handling.

The pilothouse is the operational and social heart of the design. Three large forward windows, three substantial side windows, curved corner ports, and an aft window deliver 360-degree visibility with climate control via reverse-cycle air conditioning. The layout seats the captain at a manual Stidd helm with full electronic integration, a passenger Stidd seat opposite, and an L-shaped settee aft to port with dark green Ultraleather upholstery. A small wet bar with stone countertop and stainless undermounted sink anchors the starboard side, while the nav desk forward of the passenger seat provides chart work space. Opening side windows with screens and mesh sun covers balance natural ventilation with weather protection—essential for extended cruising.

Below, the accommodations flow logically for couples or small families. The forward cabin features a centerline queen berth with hanging locker, storage throughout, an opening hatch with integrated retractable screen, and an LG flat-screen TV. The main salon features a U-shaped dinette with teak dining table that converts to a berth, reading lights, and portlights with screens and curtains. The head sits at the companionway base with a separate shower stall, dark green stone countertop, and Vacuflush electric toilet. The galley forward offers a two-burner Princess electric cooktop, Sharp microwave/convection oven, Dometic refrigerator, and abundant locker storage. Throughout, varnished teak trim, teak and white bulkheads, white overheads, and traditional teak-and-holly cabin sole create a warm, light interior that reflects classic Downeast styling.

Mechanical systems support extended cruising. A 350-gallon fiberglass fuel tank and 100-gallon fresh water tank provide substantial range and comfort. Dual Razor primary fuel filters with vacuum gauges, an Onan 9KW generator (1,378 hours as of December 2025), a Seaward Marine 11-gallon hot water heater, and a 28-gallon holding tank round out core infrastructure. A Village Marine water maker (not currently operational) and Shurflo Aqua King II fresh water pump offer

2007 Grand Banks 39 Eastbay SX: Refined Coastal Cruiser with New Twin Yammer Engines
Overview
BLUE TANG represents a mature example of Grand Banks' celebrated Eastbay 39 SX design—a 42.42-foot motor yacht engineered for serious coastal cruising with the comfort and visibility that define the Downeast pilothouse tradition. Built in 2007, this twin-screw displacement cruiser combines C. Raymond Hunt's signature deep-V hull design with a fully enclosed pilothouse, a thoughtfully appointed interior, and the kind of practical seamanship features that appeal to experienced boaters seeking reliable, efficient passage-making in New England waters and beyond. What sets BLUE TANG apart in the current market is her mechanical foundation: she is undergoing a complete engine repower with brand-new 2026 Yammer 6LY440 440-horsepower common-rail diesel engines paired with ZF transmissions and electronic controls. This major capital investment—one of the most significant expenses a yacht owner faces—arrives with new engine warranties and positions the vessel for years of quiet, dependable service. The repower, scheduled for completion by late May 2025, includes new cutlass bearings, trued shafts, dripless shaft seals, and 5-bladed bronze propellers, ensuring that propulsion performance and reliability meet modern standards while preserving the classic lines and proven seakeeping characteristics the 39 SX is known for. The vessel has been maintained with care and used lightly during recent Maine summers, with winter storage indoors—a regimen that protects fiberglass, systems, and structural integrity. Now berthed in Belfast, Maine, BLUE TANG is ready for her next owner to step aboard a fully equipped, mechanically refreshed cruising platform.
Hull Design and Construction
The 39 SX hull is the work of C. Raymond Hunt Associates, the legendary naval architecture firm behind some of the finest seagoing motor yachts of the past four decades. Hunt's deep-V design is engineered to deliver a dry, comfortable ride in a seaway while maintaining the shallow-draft characteristics that allow exploration of coastal bays and rivers—a critical balance for Maine cruising. Construction follows traditional Grand Banks methods: solid fiberglass below the waterline transitions to closed-cell foam coring above the waterline, creating a strong, buoyant structure with improved insulation and impact resistance. The hull is reinforced with a fiberglass and foam structural grid, and the keel incorporates partial tunnels for the twin propellers, reducing draft and protecting the props in shallow water. The bottom is painted green, while the topsides display a classic blue hull with white boot stripe and gold cove stripe—a color scheme that evokes the working fishing vessels of Maine's maritime heritage. Protection comes from a PVC rubrail with stainless steel chafe strip running the waterline, quarter guards painted to match the hull, and a teak swim platform at the transom fitted with a Freedom hydraulic dinghy lift. This combination of practical protection and refined detailing is characteristic of Grand Banks' attention to both durability and aesthetics. At 13.25 feet of beam and 3.33 feet of draft, BLUE TANG offers a moderate footprint suitable for protected and semi-exposed coastal waters, while her 350-gallon fuel capacity and cruising speed of 24 knots support extended passages with reasonable fuel economy.
Pilothouse and Helm Design
The pilothouse is the signature feature of the Eastbay design—a fully enclosed, climate-controlled command center that provides 360-degree visibility and protection from weather. Three large forward windows, three large side windows with opening sections and mesh screens, curved aft corner windows, and a large aft window with door create an unobstructed view around the vessel while allowing natural ventilation through opening side windows and a center forward window with electric actuator. The helm station to starboard features a manual Stidd seat with stainless steel base and folding footrest, positioned at a traditional vertical teak-rimmed wheel with full instrument and systems displays forward. A chart table with lift-up lid and storage sits just forward of the passenger seat to port, also furnished with a Stidd seat. Overhead white lights with separate red night lights provide illumination, while a 12-volt subpanel outboard of the helm allows for future system expansion. The pilothouse aft section includes an L-shaped settee with dark green Ultraleather upholstery, a small wet bar with dark green stone countertop, undermounted stainless sink, and hot/cold faucet, creating an informal gathering space during cruising or at anchor. Storage below the wet bar accommodates liquor and glassware, and curtains on side and aft windows manage light and privacy. A companionway between the helm and passenger seats descends to the main salon below, integrating the pilothouse seamlessly with the vessel's living spaces. This layout reflects the practical wisdom of pilothouse design: the helmsman enjoys an elevated command position with panoramic views, while passengers and crew can relax in a comfortable, protected environment without isolation from the helm. The Stidd seats, with their adjustable height and ergonomic support, are the standard for serious cruising yachts and reduce fatigue during long passages.
Electronics and Navigation
BLUE TANG is equipped with a modern Raymarine navigation suite centered on an Axiom Pro 12S color touch-screen hybrid display, a platform known for intuitive operation and integration with multiple sensors. A Quantum 2 Doppler radome provides solid-state radar without the moving antenna, improving reliability and reducing power consumption. The Raymarine p70s autopilot handles the steering during long passages, while an AIS700 transceiver ensures the vessel is visible to commercial traffic and other AIS-equipped vessels. Navigation support includes a KVH Azimuth 1000 digital compass for precise heading reference, Bennett trim tabs to optimize running attitude and fuel efficiency, and a Computank electronic tank gauge and battery meter that provides real-time fuel and freshwater consumption data—critical information for passage planning and system management. Communication equipment includes a Standard Horizon GX2360S VHF radio with RAM Mic + at the helm, ensuring clear voice contact with other vessels and shore-based services. An ACR remote control spotlight aids night navigation and anchoring, while KVH satellite TV provides entertainment and weather routing information at the dock or while at anchor. This electronics suite represents a mid-range approach to modern cruising: comprehensive enough to support safe offshore navigation and passage-making, yet not so complex as to require constant technical management. The Raymarine ecosystem is well-established in the cruising community, with widespread service support and a large library of software updates and integrations.
Accommodations and Interior Layout
Below the pilothouse, BLUE TANG's interior is organized for efficient coastal cruising for a couple or small family, with comfortable spaces for day trips and entertaining guests. The main salon features a U-shaped dinette opposite the galley, with a teak dining table that converts to a berth for additional sleeping capacity. A main AC/DC electrical panel manages house and engine systems, while opening portlights with screens and curtains provide natural ventilation. Storage surrounds the dinette in lockers and shelves, and a safe is concealed behind the settee seat back. An overhead opening to the pilothouse creates visual and acoustic connection to the helm area. The galley, forward of the head, is compact but well-equipped with a two-burner Princess electric cooktop, a Sharp microwave/convection oven, and a Dometic refrigerator. A round stainless steel sink with hot/cold faucet, dark green stone countertop, and abundant locker and drawer storage with paneled teak faces make meal preparation practical in a seaway. An overhead opening hatch with integrated OceanAir skyscreen provides ventilation and natural light. The head, located at the base of the steps from the cockpit, includes a separate round shower stall with sliding door, a Vacuflush electric marine head, dark green stone countertop with undermounted white sink, and hot/cold faucet. Large stainless steel opening portlight with curtains, storage lockers, and a teak-paneled door create a private, well-lit space. The forward cabin features a centerline queen berth with steps up on either side, a hanging locker with louvered teak door, and abundant storage in lockers and drawers. An overhead opening hatch with integrated retractable OceanAir screen and shade, opening portlights with screens and curtains, and Frigast bulkhead reading lights support comfortable sleeping. An LG flat-screen television mounted on the aft bulkhead and a teak-framed mirror complete the cabin. Throughout the interior, varnished teak trim and a mix of teak and white bulkheads
